How to play Tonele
How do I play?
Each day there is one two-character word from HSK 1, 2 or 3, the same word for everyone. Type a word in pinyin (tone marks or numbers are optional, so pengyou works) or in Chinese characters, then tap it in the list. You have six guesses.
What do the colors mean?
Every guess shows four boxes per syllable: the character, the initial, the final and the tone (1–4, or · for the neutral tone). Blue with ✓ means right and in the right syllable. Orange with ↔ means it's in the word, but in the other syllable. Gray means it isn't in the word. Colors and symbols always appear together, so the game works without telling colors apart.
When does the word change?
At midnight UTC, which is 8 am in Beijing. The page shows a countdown when you finish.
Which words can come up?
Two-character words from the official HSK 3.0 syllabus, levels 1–3, with the pinyin checked against official data. Words whose tones change in speech (with 一 or 不) are left out of the answers so the tone clues stay fair.
